Men Also Go Through "Menopause"

Crazy - Men-opause is what Girls Go Through

Many people don’t realize that men also go through menopause. It’s weird that the word menopause is related to women going through it. With men it’s called andropause. Why they didn’t just call it menopause is funny to me.

Anyway, besides my silly attitude about what it’s called, men go through this too. Many just don’t know that it’s called andropause.

Basically, Andropause, is the technical term for the hormone imbalance all men will experience as they age. Commonly called male menopause, andropause typically begins to affect men between the ages of 35 and 40. In some cases, however, the testosterone deficiencies associated with andropause may occur in much younger men.

Whatever their age, a man needs testosterone to maintain energy and focus, to build lean muscle, to boost his sex drive, and to regulate his moods. In other words, the onset of andropause (and the drop in testosterone that goes with it) can have a big impact on the quality of their personal and professional life. In fact, upon entering andropause, many men say they just don’t feel like themselves anymore.

What Causes Andropause?

Andropause occurs as men get older, primarily because their glands slow down and stop producing adequate levels of hormone. The result is hormone imbalance. In particular, testosterone, thyroid and DHEA levels decline. Meanwhile, estrogen levels often increase—not a good thing for a man.

What Are the Symptoms of Andropause?

It happens when there is a decrease in the production of male testosterone and is common in men between 40-60. Testosterone is the hormone that is produced in the testicles and adrenal glands and performs functions similar to those of estrogens in women.

From the age of 30, testosterone levels begin to decrease by 15%, then at around age 45 the first symptoms of andropause begin to be noticed by most men. By age 50, low levels of testosterone appear in 50% of men. By age 60, it is estimated that more than half of men are impaired by andropause, and by age 70, 70% of adults are very low in testosterone.

The causes of low testosterone are mainly related to aging, but are influenced by other factors that trigger andropause such as stress, alcohol consumption, certain medications, obesity, infections and the elevation of the level of SHBG or “sex hormone binding globulin*”. (*any of a group of simple proteins soluble in salt solutions and forming a large fraction of blood serum protein.)

In addition, testosterone helps to form proteins and is primarily responsible for the sexual reproduction of men. Men have different symptoms during andropause and they are easy to recognize:

  1. Changes in attitude and mood, such as irritability and nervousness
  2. Fatigue and low energy
  3. Lack of libido and sexual desire
  4. Decreased erection, ED or complete impotence
  5. Premature ejeculation
  6. Stubborn weight gain, particularly around the waist and belly
  7. Reduced strength and volume of ejaculation
  8. Reduced lean muscle mass and muscle definition
  9. Bone deterioration
  10. Sensation of heat to the face
  11. Circulatory problems
  12. Excessive sweating
  13. Headaches
  14. Mental fogginess
  15. Insomnia
  16. Depression
  17. Breast enlargement
  18. Decreased self-confidence
  19. Reduced body hair
  20. Forgetfulness

CalMag-C definitely helps with this and reduces the feelings of stress.
